Book One focuses on a lone girl investigating a mysterious circus that comes to her small town. It seemingly steals energy from the townspeople that comes to its shows and sucks in all color from its surroundings. In just a few days, an ordinary looking tent bursts into the most wondrous thing anyone has ever feasted their eyes upon.
And yet Mierna, the one girl who happens to steal a look at the back of the performance on accident, is unaffected by it. By the end of the whole ordeal, she gets a glimpse of the Fae, a parallel faerie world that is somehow bound to our own.
It was the curiosity of this second world that prompted the next book in the series, Mierna & the Keeper of Nightmares.
